Meet Our Caring Doctors

Dr. Nick Gunasayan

Dr. Nick Gunasayan grew up in Dallas, Texas and graduated from high school at Cistercian Preparatory School in 1989. He then went on to Austin College where he played on the lacrosse team while earning a bachelors degree in biology.

After graduating from Austin College, Dr. Gunasayan enrolled in the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco and earned his doctorate in podiatric medicine in 1999. Upon completion of his medical school, he entered a 3 year podiatric surgical residency located at South Miami Hospital. He is proud to have participated in the Yucatan Crippled Children’s Project, which is operated by podiatric physicians and surgeons affiliated with Barry University School of Graduate Medical Sciences. 


Dr. Gunasayan also assisted in clinical trial studies in heel pain, post-operative pain control studies, and diabetic wound care involving synthetic skin grafts.


Dr. Gunasayan finished his residency program in June of 2002 and began practicing on the Central Coast.

Dr. Gunasayan is trained in all aspects of podiatric surgery including foot and ankle fracture repair, diabetic limb salvage, ankle arthroscopy, forefoot surgery, diabetic wound care, sports medicine, and all aspects of podiatric medical management. He has served San Luis Obispo County for over two decades in his quaint family feel offices with a focus on getting his patients healed quickly using a conservative treatment-first approach to get patients back to active living.

Dr. Gunasayan presents in speaking engagements for multiple medical companies to educate doctors on practical applications  instrumentation, of Biotissue products and techniques in surgery.

In his spare time, Dr. Gunasayan enjoys playing golf, snowboarding, and spending time with his family. Dr. Gunasayan is a dedicated father and husband. He can be found at the golf course or at junior golf tournaments with his girls. He and his wife are proud of their two daughters Bella and Gigi and their competitive golf journeys. His oldest daughter, Bella, will begin her college golf career in the fall of 2023.

Dr. Gunasayan has served the communities on the Central Coast since 2002. Dr. Gunasayan proudly features his father’s original watercolor paintings in his offices.

Dr. Abernathy will be Joining Our Podiatric Family in September of 2023!

Dr. Lant Abernathy

We would like to welcome our new associate Dr. Lant Abernathy, DPM. Dr Abernathy is a native of San Luis Obispo County, growing up on an 80-acre ranch in Paso Robles. He graduated from Templeton High School in 2012 and moved to Southern California to attend the University of Redlands. He obtained his BA with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry in 2015 and was involved with numerous leadership opportunities, athletics, and extracurricular clubs.

In 2019 he graduated from Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine, where he excelled in all facets of medicine including foot and ankle surgery. Dr. Abernathy was then matched at the prestigious and rigorous Inova Fairfax Medical Campus Foot and Ankle Surgery Residency Program in Northern Virginia. He received extensive training in not only advanced foot and ankle reconstruction surgery, but experience in plastic surgery, orthopedic trauma, vascular surgery, infectious disease, and internal medicine. Dr. Abernathy decided to further expand his clinical and surgical expertise by attending the CORE Institute Advanced Foot and Ankle Surgery Fellowship Program in Phoenix, Az. An ACFAS-certified fellowship at the fourth-largest orthopedic practice in the US. He gained advanced knowledge and experience in foot and ankle surgery training with an emphasis on total ankle arthroplasty, ankle arthroscopy and sports medicine, flatfoot and high arch feet deformities, revisional surgery, trauma, and advanced forefoot reconstruction.

Dr. Abernathy has completed over 1200 surgical cases, 4,000 procedures including over 50 total ankle arthroplasties. His training has provided him the most up-to-date and current techniques in the field. Dr. Abernathy is dedicated to providing the best patient care possible, with the patients well being of the utmost importance. In his downtime, Dr. Abernathy likes to spend time with his family and friends out on his family’s Adelaida ranch, travel internationally, hike, snowboard, and do any outdoor activities.

Our On-Staff Pedorthist

Travis Freitas

Travis Freitas is a Board Certified Pedorthist (C. Ped.) and has been practicing on the Central Coast since November of 2000. A pedorthist is a specialist that fills foot and ankle related prescriptions after your physician has determined what type of device you need to have constructed. Travis will conduct an evaluation, cast your foot/ankle, and construct your appliance based on your physician’s prescription. The industry of “Pedorthics” (peh-DOR-thix) is the design, manufacture, modification, and fit of footwear to alleviate problems caused by disease, overuse, congenital condition, or injury.

Travis Freitas received his Pedorthic certification from The Medical College of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee. At that time, he became the youngest certified pedorthist in the nation. Travis started his Pedorthic career by establishing the Pedorthic Department of a retail shoe store in Pismo Beach. Travis has five years of retail footwear experience and is an expert shoe fitter. He is very familiar with shoe manufacturers, their construction techniques, and he can select the proper shoe size/style based on your specific needs.

Travis established his own Pedorthic business in May of 2012. Travis networks with multiple podiatry offices along the Central Coast to provide full service Pedorthic care at your podiatrist’s office.


Travis’ specialties include accommodative (softer style) orthotics, diabetic footwear for ulcer prevention/healing, foot/ankle bracing, and all types of shoe modifications including sole lifts.


Travis married his wife Tanya in 2007 and they live in the Five Cities area. They have two children, Denver and Sierra. Travis and his wife enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, snow skiing, and all water sports.

Travis is the most experienced Pedorthist along the Central Coast. Travis has a genuine love for his profession and it makes all the difference in the Pedorthic care he provides.
